Standards/Learning Targets

Standards:

  • Standard 3: Invent and Discover to Create - 2. Ideate and build works of art and design to demonstrate growth and proficiency in traditional and new art media.

  • Standard 4: Relate and Connect to Transfer - 2. Develop proficiency in visual communication skills that extends learning to new contexts.

Learning Targets:

  • Students will be able to transfer their knowledge of a topic acquired in their Ag class to visually create a graphic design using a digital drawing program or Adobe Illustrator.

  • Students will understand how translate arguments into persuasive imagery that align with the elements of art and design.

  • Students will culminate their works into an Instagram post that demonstrates their understanding of changes in the environment by graphically designing the post utilizing the Canva suite.

  • Students will understand how to make social media posts both accessibile and marketable.

Big Ideas/Possible Misconceptions

  • Big Ideas:

    • CHANGE

    • Environmentalism

    • Time/Space

    • Design

    • Cohesion

    • Environmental Justice

  • Possible Misconceptions: I can imagine that students might focus on ways to save the environment more so than connecting with the overall idea of change. For example, instead of creating a post about recycling, I might challenge students to create a post that demonstrates the impacts of recycling over time and whether or not this has changed the state of the environment.

Formative Assessments:

One of the first formative assessments would be a sketchbook assignment for ideating possible images for students' concepts and topics related to water, wildfires, or animal production. First, students would submit their concept/argument online, and then I would compare their sketches to their concepts. This is a complete/incomplete assignment. To receive the maximum score, the student must fill a sketchbook page with at least 4 possible images that accentuate or connect to their argumentative topic.

One of the last formative assessments would be a peer assessment of the final Instagram posts, before they are published online. Students will share the post with an assigned partner and they will grade it, according to the summative rubric. Then, the students will make the necessary revisions according to their partner's feedback. This would also be a complete/incomplete assignment.
