In addition to my major in Art Education, I also have minors in Ethnic Studies and Spanish. I chose to study all of these content areas because I am deeply invested in advocating for the importance of arts and humanities in schools, developing equitable practices and policies in my classroom, and providing students with a studio atmosphere that will challenge and inspire them to create art that both honor and challenge contemporary norms and nuances.

I was led to the art studio by a family of artists, my teachers in grade school, and through many experiences observing, creating, and studying art. But, I was brought into the field of art education through a study abroad experience in Todos Santos, Mexico where I studied art as it relates to the environment and the community. Because of this experience abroad and my experiences in a professional studio, I hope to engage my students in both community-based and individualized artworks that create dialogue and meaning as it relates to both the artist and the environment. I hope to show students contemporary art and artists and hope that they will enjoy analyzing and observing art just as much as they love making it.

In my studio practice, I explore fragmentation and abstraction through painting, fibrous media, and collage. Human nature, environmental concepts, and sociological systems drive the content of my work. I often find myself imagining realities that reconcile with the shortcomings of humanity and offer a post-human reality. The work that I have selected for this exhibition evaluates yet challenges human experiences and capabilities. It explores circumstances that invite the viewer to consider metamorphosis, the transitions of life and death, as actuality; a thing we aim to achieve although it can not be avoided. My experiences abroad in Mexico and Italy have heavily influenced my work and forced me to consider artists as active participants in many different environments. I aim to continue to research other artists, forms of media, and processes as I want to be an art educator who offers endless possibilities to their students while still maintaining a vibrant practice.

Outside of the classroom, I am always in pursuit of travel both domestically and internationally. I also aim to visit lots of art galleries and museum spaces. When I’m not immersed in the art world, you can find me cooking, playing board games, and spending quality time with friends and family.
